The epigenetic backdrop of a long, healthy life is the downregulation of NF-kB expression and the upregulation of its nemesis, Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2, or Nrf-2. Nrf-2 activation upregulates various antioxidant and detoxification enzymes, such as glyoxylate carboligase (GCL
), manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). With brilliant wisdom, Nature has supplied a veritable cornucopia of agents that do exactly this – namely upregulate Nrf-2 and downregulate NF-kB. These agents are known as medicinal plants!*
