2013 has been a great year and we are looking forward to more progress in the year to come.

We held our annual CME conference on September 22, 2013, at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. The topic was Integrative Endocrinology and featured speakers: Jared Skowron, ND, Artemis Morris, ND, Marie Winters, ND, and many others.

On October 2, 2013, House Bill 612 was passed by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives by an overwhelming majority: 161-33. House Bill 612, sponsored by Republican Mark Mustio, would provide licensure of Naturopathic Doctors in Pennsylvania. It would allow Naturopathic Doctors to practice with a defined scope of practice and increase our ability to help the people of our state.

As specialists in natural medicine, NDs will be able to meet more of Pennsylvanians' health care needs. Integrating Naturopathic physicians into the Board of Medicine would put Pennsylvania at the forefront of health care reform within a fiscally responsible government. It will not limit the sales of supplements, botanicals, or homeopathic remedies at retail stores, offices, and pharmacies or by the general public. This legislation will simply preclude anyone who does not meet the educational criteria and standardization from using the title Naturopathic Doctor, ND, NMD or other derivations.

Our next effort will be to clear the Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee, and are hopeful for a vote on the Senate floor in 2014. Stay tuned!
