Now that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has taken effect, AANP and its affiliate associations in licensed states are initiating a grassroots strategy aimed at getting patients to speak up for their right to have their ND’s services covered by health insurance.
Section 2706 of the ACA states that health insurance plans cannot discriminate among services provided by licensed health care professionals.  However, many states are neither observing nor enforcing this provision – and others are interpreting it to mean that ND services can be covered out-of-network rather than in-network.
AANP leaders in the licensed states have been meeting for many months to exchange information and help one another with strategy.  As a result, most insurance commissioners in licensed states now know about Section 2706 and so do most insurance companies.  While all that is undeniable progress, the fact remains that ND services are simply not covered on an equivalent basis with the same services provided by MDs.
We’re therefore rolling out a grassroots campaign, encouraging NDs to have their patients go to a special web page,, to send messages urging their state’s officials to follow the law and include NDs as covered health insurance providers.  The effort will take place in 6 states: California, Hawaii, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon, and the District of Columbia.  If you see patients in any of these states, please direct them to– and print out this flyer that you can post in your office.  It’s time for patients to speak up for their right to have their NDs covered equitably by insurance!
