"Naturopathic physicians ought to be licensed in all 50 states!" So proclaimed Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), speaking from the podium at a dinner in his honor in Washington, DC on September 29th.

Harkin is the author of Section 2706, the non-discrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act, the provision designed to ensure that insurers treat licensed health care providers equitably with respect to plan participation.
Naturopathic physicians ought to be licensed in all 50 states!
AANP and many other organizations, such as the Integrative Healthcare Policy Consortium, have been aggressively advocating for states to implement Section 2706 as it was intended by Senator Harkin.

Harkin will be retiring later this year after serving 5 terms (30 years) in the U.S. Senate and 40 years in the Congress overall. In recent years, he has chaired the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. At last week’s tribute dinner, he was introduced by Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), chair of the Appropriations Committee and the lead sponsor – two years’ running – of AANP’s Naturopathic Medicine Week Resolution.
